                                                           26th March 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope you are keeping well during this time. As you are aware the school closure will extend into the Easter Holidays.

On Thursday 12th March your child/children received some class specific activities to be spread over the initial two week closure.  This work was to be completed and we recommend that you set aside some time each day for these activities and not complete the work in one sitting.  Book Rental Books and PM Readers are the property of the school and will need to be returned in good condition when the school re-opens.  Now that the school will remain closed for an additional week, class teachers will set additional work for the week bringing us up to the Easter break.  This work will be uploaded to the school website and also sent to you by email in the coming days through our Aladdin system. With this work you will also receive your child’s teacher’s work email address. Teachers can be contacted directly by email, work can be scanned/photographed and attached. Teachers will endeavour to respond during school hours. We hope that this will facilitate two-way engagement.  Please bear with us, this is new for all of us!

As a school we completely understand that this is a challenging and unprecedented time.  Please do not worry about progression on new topics.  There is obviously a lot of anxiety amongst parents. Our country is in a crisis.  We understand that learning at home may not be feasible in every house every day and would also like to remind you that not all learning involves pens, paper and books. There are lots of enjoyable activities that you can do with your child to help and support them through this time of uncertainty.  The school will eventually reopen.  We are all trained, professional educators. We as a staff will work together to make up for lost time and ensure that no child will be at a disadvantage.

I have been asked by the Department of Education to convey to pupils, the absolute need to practice social and physical distancing, and to minimise physical contact with each other, to help avoid the spread of Covid-19. Pupils are asked to avoid meeting up and in all circumstances to adhere to HSE guidelines on hygiene and social distancing. As part of the school community, parents and guardians are urged to support their children to maintain the restrictions on congregating for the safety of all in our community.

The Department of Education and Skills’ NEPS psychologists have developed advice and some resources for young people to manage and stay well when schools are closed. These are worth a read and are available at https://www.education.ie/covid19#15

In addition to the normal supports, the NCSE is providing online resources for children with special educational needs. The materials have been developed by Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists and will be added to in the coming days.  They are laid out by class level and are available at https://ncse.ie/online-resources

Some of the best things that you can encourage and assist your child in doing are:

  • Talk to your child. Develop their art of conversation. Get to know one another better.
  • Read as much as possible (audio books are good too!)
  • Revise sight words and numbers in the junior classes
  • Revise tables in the senior classes
  • Some practical hands on maths e.g. weighing, measuring, capacity, sequencing
  • Some fine motor work e.g. Lego, cutting, playdoh, baking, puzzles etc.
  • Physical activity every day
  • Some free writing e.g. keeping a diary, writing a report on a walk
  • Develop their vocabulary. Have a new word of the day!
  • Independent age appropriate life skills e.g. tying shoelaces, drying up, making lunch etc.
  • Some art/music where possible during the week. (Doesn’t have to be guided)

I would also encourage you as parents to be kind to yourselves.  You are doing your best and it will be enough. You are loving your children and supporting them through this tough time. Above all, keep safe.  I will be in contact as and when the need arises.

Mise le meas,

Patricia Sadlier
